RICHARDS WINS POLE & LEADS CHAMPIONSHIP

Jim Richards lifted Volvo into the outright lead in the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Championship for the first time with two pole position-winning laps at Queensland's Lakeside Raceway today.

The five-times Bathurst 1000 winner earned a championship point for each of his pole positions in qualifying for tomorrow's fifth round, boosting his series score to 97, two clear of previous co-leader Brad Jones who remained on 95. Richards' performances in his front-drive Volvo Dealer Team S40 means the Swedish manufacturer is now leading the championship for the first time since it entered the series in 1995.

Richards won pole position in the opening qualifying session with a lap time of 52.08-secs around the 2.4km circuit in hot weather. He was quicker in the second session, in cooler conditions, with 51.77-secs. In both sessions Richards bettered the race lap record of 52.50-secs set by New Zealand's Craig Baird in a work BMW in 1997. Jones, driving an Audi Sport Australia A4 quattro, qualified second in both sessions at Lakeside and will start alongside Richards on the front-row in the two 25-lap races.

Queensland's Cameron McLean was third fastest in both sessions in a Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320, and will share the second row in the two races with Jones' Victorian team-mate Cameron McConville. McLean's car won the past six championship races at Lakeside when driven by Paul Morris. NSW's Mark Adderton, who is second to McLean in the Independents Cup, missed the opening qualifying session because of gearbox problems, and was fifth fastest in the second session.

DRIVER QUOTES:

JIM RICHARDS (Volvo Dealer Team S40): "Everything went right for that one really good in the second qualifying, but it was a time I knew we could do - the car is that good. The Audis are going well, but I think (Cameron) McLean and the BMW will be tough. The BMWs have been unbeatable here for the last few years."

CAMERON McLEAN (Greenfield Mowers Racing BMW 320): "I'm not happy being on the second row because the car is capable of better. I'm not that far off what the BMW works team was doing around here last year, but the Audis and Volvo have improved. I've got to make a good start."

CAMERON McCONVILLE (Audi Sport Australia A4): "In qualifying I wasn't able to squeeze that last bit of time out of the car, but it feels very consistent on old tyres. The top four are all close again so it's impossible to predict a winner."
