Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series Heads To The Big Smoke
Round four of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series heads to Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney on May 29-30 in what will be the first time the series has appeared as a stand alone event in a capital city since its inception in 2000.
It is getting down to the business end of the series and with three different round winners in as many rounds, a win at Eastern Creek Raceway could improve the chances of any of the top five drivers of taking out the 2004 title.
Super Cheap Auto Racing's Luke Youlden currently leads the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series championship, showing that consistency pays off with a second position overall in round one, a fifth and another second in the following two rounds that has placed him in front of Gulf Western Oil/Jayco Racing's Matthew White who led the championship for the first two rounds.
The dark horse of this year's series Team Fujitsu's Jose Fernandez, is currently sitting in third position after taking out his first ever podium position in third place at the last round at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria, equal with Howard Racing's Cameron McLean and closely followed by Team Kiwi Racing entrant and third place-getter overall for the 2003 championship Mark Porter.
With only 68 points separating the top five drivers and with only three rounds remaining in the championship, drivers will be pushing the limits around the Eastern Creek circuit to ensure they are within reach of taking the 2004 title going into the second last round at Queensland Raceway in July. The Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series will be the major support category to its 'big brother' series - the V8 Supercar Championship Series at the fifth round for the second time this year.
A new driver who is expected to put pressure on the front runners for the reminder of the series and who will make his debut in the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series at Eastern Creek this weekend is ex-Formula One and Champ car driver Alex Yoong.
Yoong will be replacing Shane Beikoff in the Shane Beikoff Racing number 68 Ford Falcon AU for the remaining three rounds of the series being held at Eastern Creek, Queensland Raceway and Mallala Motorsport Park in Adelaide.
"Signing Alex (Yoong) for the Konica Minolta Series is not only a positive move for Shane Beikoff Racing, but it is a coup for the V8 Supercar category," Team Manager Shane Beikoff said.
"Alex had other overseas driving options but has chosen our V8 Supercar category to continue his racing career. The experience he has gained recently from Formula 1 and Champ Cars is significant and we should welcome his input into the category."
The Eastern Creek event program will consist of five support categories including Commodore Cup, Saloon Cars, Improved Production, HQ Holdens and Formula Vee.
Admission charges are $25 for adults, $15 for students and concessions and children under 12 years of age are free. Make sure you get to the event early as Grandstand and V8 Supercar Paddock entry is also free of charge.
Don't miss a second of the action as the up-and-coming V8 Supercar drivers of the future show what they are made of as they battle the 3.93 kilometre Eastern creek circuit.
