QUEENSLANDER Mark King today wrapped up the 2000 Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship after surviving a dramatic final round at Sandown International Raceway, Melbourne.

With his only potential challenger deciding not to compete, King had a virtually clear run to the title in his Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo V, but was forced to retire from the first of two races when a collision with another competitor punctured a tyre. He finished sixth in race two after starting 38th.

The races were won by Ed Aitken and Tony Scott respectively, both driving HSV Holden Commodores.

King also won the Autobarn High Performance class championship, while honours in the Hippies Sports Touring class went to David Wood, driving a Honda Integra Type R.

James Philip (Ford Falcon XR8) won the Pennzoil V8 Touring class championship and Daryl Coon became the highest scoring individual GTP competitor in winning the Pennzoil Six-cylinder class. Kosi Kalaitzidis, driving a Proton Satria GTi, claimed his second successive Poolrite Four-cylinder Touring title.
