Alex Davison Enjoys Grand Prix Podium
IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison has driven a superb second V8 Supercar race at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix to finish third.
Beginning third, Davison made a perfect start to pass pole sitter Jamie Whincup and HRT’s former V8 champion Garth Tander to the first corner to lead the race.
Starting on the faster soft compound tyres, Davison was pushed hard by Jason Richards in the first 13 laps of the race, before pitting for fuel and the slower control tyre.
Davison had a 10 second lead on Murphy in third when he entered pit lane. After his compulsory stop, Davison re-entered the race in second place, having lost a position to Richards and was passed by Tander soon after who was then on soft tyres.
In third place, Davison was in exactly the same predicament as he was in the first race of the weekend, he was on hard tyres and had to defend against Rick Kelly and several others on soft tyres.
In the last 10 laps Davison held his place to finish third, which gives him a strong chance to stand on the podium at the end of the weekend.
Davison will start tomorrow’s third and final 25 lap V8 Supercar race of the Grand Prix weekend in third position.
The race starts at 1.10pm (AEDST)
What IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison had to say:
“When I got out in front to lead the race I could tell we'd improved the IRWIN Ford, but it wasn’t quite enough. I was expecting to get swamped by 15 odd guys at the end of the race, so I was surprised it was only Garth (Tander) that came past. Jason (Richards) had heaps of speed on the soft tyres, he reeled me in on that first stint, I was really surprised at how much faster he was, he did a great job. I pushed as hard as I could, expecting guys like Jamie (Whincup) and Rick (Kelly) to catch me up at the end. Luckily they weren’t able to. It was a great result, I shouldn't be too fussy. I'm too competitive I think. The rest of the year I'd give my left arm to come third, now I am disappointed I couldn’t go better. We improved the IRWIN Ford from yesterday that's for sure, we've still got a little way to go before we have the pace that Garth and Jason Richards and some of the others guys have, but we are racing at the front of the field and that's fantastic. It's great to give ours sponsors some good coverage over the Grand Prix weekend.”
What IRWIN Engineer Daniel Kroehn had to say:
“It was good day, Alex (Davison) got a clean start. We were running a different strategy and we were able to run away from the rest of the field using our soft tyres. We made an improvement to the IRWIN Ford overnight which was good and it showed. IRWIN Racing was in a solid third position. We'll do our homework and hopefully continue to improve it for tomorrow. There's not a lot of points separating the top five drivers overall, the weekend podium is going to be what the guys are racing for tomorrow. We're in the middle of it, hopefully we'll finish ahead of a couple of those guys tomorrow and round out the weekend somewhere on the podium.”
