The IRWIN Racing Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 of Lee Holdsworth has come off second-hand in a multicar accident that marred the final race of the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway.

Holdsworth and none of the other drivers involved suffered injuries, but the incident on just the opening lap eliminated seven cars on the spot.

Holdsworth was left nowhere to go as cars were sent spinning across the track right in the path of the IRWIN Racing E63. Holdsworth limped back to the pits but heavy damage, especially to the right-rear, forced the team to park the car for the rest of the race.

It was a disappointing end to a weekend that brought 18th and 16th place finishes in the opening two races, with the IRWIN crew aiming to complte the weekend with a result somewhere near the top-10.

Race pace of the Erebus Motorsport V8-prepared IRWIN Racing E63 was encouraging, especially overall balance with the car looking after its tyres.

With the aim at improving qualifying pace, Holdsworth is looking forward to the next event in Townsville in three weeks time. The Sucrogen Townsville 400 features separate 200km races on the Saturday and Sunday, and the longer format is sure to better suit the IRWIN team.
