Team Betta Electrical battles the heat at Hidden Valley.
Team Betta Electrical battled high temperatures this weekend at Darwin's Hidden Valley Circuit to finish Mid-field in the three day event. Friday's practice session saw Max Wilson, car 65 with 12th fastest time of 1:10:13, just .40 of a second behind the fastest car, Greg Murphy at 1:09:73.
Tony Longhurst in car 66 was placed 28th in practice with a time of 1:10:84.
Qualifying saw both Team Betta Electrical cars drop several positions with Max Wilson placed 20th on the grid with a fastest laptime of 1:09.20 behind the fastest qualifier, Jason Bright with a time of 1:07.05. Tony Longhurst in car 66 took position 32 on the grid with a time of 1:09.65.
Race One conducted in the late afternoon on Saturday realised a finish for the team with Max Wilson coming home in 18th position and Tony Longhurst being placed 245th. Disappointing results for the team as expectations were running high for both cars prior to the race.
Sunday saw the temperature rise to 35c placing extra strain on the drivers with cabin temperatures reaching 65c during both race two and race three, each of 35 laps.
Practice for these events saw a problem arise in car 65 of Max Wilson when an oil line became dislodged from the engine requiring some time in the pits to rectify.
Race 2 saw a coming together of several cars at turn one, namely Todd Kelly, Tander and Tratt all narrowly avoiding the TEAM BETTA ELECTRICAL cars as they speared back across the circuit.
Again a mid-field finish was the best the team could accomplish with a 20th placing for car 66 of Tony Longhurst and 22nd position for Max Wilson in car 65. Both cars were experiencing a lack of grip coming out of the corners and were losing valuable time with each lap.
The pace car came out onto the circuit for 3 laps, allowing the cars to close-up. Hidden Valley is an extremely difficult circuit to pass on, thus seeing a procession of cars holding their position throughout the race.
The final 35-lap event, race 3 was little different for the TEAM BETTA ELECTRICAL cars.
Max Wilson in car 65 managed to finish in 14th position ahead of Tony Longhurst who finished in 20th position.
A somewhat disappointing result for the team, particularly after having such high expectations of having solved both cars handling problems at Eastern Creek Round Three event just 3 weeks ago. [Prior to event four, Briggs Motorsport head John Briggs was confident both cars would finish in the top ten, however this was not to be, with the same inherent handling problems persisting with both cars.
This season has seen the most competitive field ever in the V8 Supercars with only a half a second difference in lap times, covering the field. The team will now move on to Round 5 in the series with the Canberra 400 coming up in just 3 weeks and trust that further work on the suspensions will yield better results in the longer street circuit event.
