ORRCON RACING ON THE PACE IN DARWIN
Larkham -- Orrcon Racing continued their impressive pace during today's qualifying session at the SKYCITY V8 Supercar event in Darwin.
In his second visit to the Hidden Valley circuit Mark Winterbottom stole the show during qualifying to set the fifth fastest time. His time was less than four-tenths of a second behind the fastest time set by Mark Skaife and ensured that the 24-year-old qualified for the first top ten shootout of his career.
Jason Bargwanna was also right on the pace in his Number 10 Orrcon Racing Falcon to narrowly missing out on the eleventh top ten shootout of his career when he set the 13th fastest qualifying time. With moments remaining in the session Bargwanna was on a flying lap only to have a gearbox problem slowed his progress.
Bouyed by the pace shown during qualifying the team was confident of pushing closer to the front during today's opening 17-lap race, however luck evaded them during an opening turn melee that forced Winterbottom off the circuit before dropping him well down the order with damaged steering. He was able to climb back to 24th position at the finish.
Bargwanna wasn't so fortunate from the turn one incident suffering a broken steering arm that forced him to retire from the race.
Today's race was won by Todd Kelly ahead of pole sitter Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes.
The round continues tomorrow with a pair of 48-lap races around the 2.9km Hidden Valley circuit with each including a compulsory pit stop for a change of tyres.

Race One: DNF
"After showing a lot of promise during qualifying it was disappointing to have the gearbox stick in gear for some unknown reason on my final flying lap. I certainly believe that we had the speed to make it two Orrcon Falcons in the top ten.
"The incident in turn one was a freak incident and unfortunately we both got caught up in it.
"The most promising thing is that we have got some very good car speed and I am looking forward to moving up the order tomorrow."
Orrcon Racing Falcon #20
Qualifying: 5th Difference to 1st: +0.3145
Top Ten Shootout: 10th Difference to 1st: +1.2315
Race One: 24th
"It was great to make my first shootout, especially considering my qualifying lap was so close to the fastest time.
"I made a couple of minor mistakes in my flying lap during the shootout, but the aim now is to make more shootouts and get more experience in a one-off flying lap situation.
"Unfortunately I was unable to miss the turn one incident and had to race from the back of the car with a bent steering but I know we have got some good car speed and confident of gaining a good result in tomorrows races."
