McConville races to 23rd after first Darwin race.

May 19, 2002 (6:15pm) - Lansvale Racing Team driver Cameron McConville raced to 23rd place today in the first of three V8 Supercar races at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway this evening.

The twilight 20 lap race was held in hot conditions, with an ambient temperature of 38C ensuring that it was tough work for the 36 car field.

McConville dropped two positions from his starting position of 22nd on the first lap, but from that point on set consistently fast lap times to stay ahead of Wayne Gardner (who later pitted) and rivals Tony Longhurst, John Faulkner, Craig Baird and Steven Richards.

It was tough going with only two retirements with most competitors in the race matching each other for pace on every lap. The Lansvale Racing Team VX Commodore driver finished under 2/10ths of second behind Falcon driver Paul Weel.

Cameron McConville - "I didn't get a very good start, losing two spots but after that our race was fairly uneventful. My tyres went away a little earlier then I would have liked, so we will be making changes looking for better speed and consistency for tomorrow."

According to the team's on board data, the cabin temperature during the race reached 61C, while McConville's body temperature reached a staggering 38.8 from early (but not final) Northern Territory Institute of Sport research study reports.

Lansvale Racing are back on track tomorrow (Sunday) for two sweltering 100 lap enduro races at the 2.9km Hidden Valley circuit.
