Shootout berth for Richards at Gold Coast Indy

JASON Richards has rewarded his hard-working Tasman Motorsport crew for rebuilding his Commodore following an accident at Bathurst by putting the repaired car into the Top 10 Shootout for the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge on the Gold Coast.

The Kiwi qualified the #3 Firepower Commodore ninth fastest in qualifying today, with the Shootout and opening 22-lap race to come tomorrow.

Suffering from the effects of a cold, Richards was initially bumped out of the top 10 but fought his way back in towards the end of the qualifying session.

His team-mate Andrew Jones struggled and could only manage the 28th fastest time in his debut on the challenging 4.7-kilometre street circuit.

"I was trying fairly hard to get the lap time that we managed in the end. We've been at the tail of the top 10 consistently all day so that's about where I'd expected we would be in qualifying. I'm staggered by the pace of the guys up the front. I've got a cold and it hasn't affected me too much today but it will tomorrow over the course of a 22-lap race. I deliberately didn't wear my cool suit today that pumps ice water through a vest under my race suit. That means I have something to look forward to tomorrow! But we're in the Top 10 Shootout and that's something we can focus on."

Andrew Jones (#3 Firepower/Tasman Motorsport Commodore VZ)
"I don't think I've pushed so hard to be 28th on the grid! It's not fun, that's for sure. Looking at the data from practice we found a few areas where I could go a bit deeper under brakes and the like, but I just sailed down the road when I tried to do that. I had a few trips up the escape road. We're lacking grip and the times show it."
