V8 Supercar stars take on World Champion IronMen at Surfers Paradise
Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing drivers Mark Winterbottom and Will Power took part in a race of a different kind this morning taking-on some of the world’s best IronMen and Women on the beaches of Surfers Paradise.
“All my surfboards I’ve got at home are all trophies from the Gold Coast race and have never been used!” Winterbottom commented.
With the very best guidance, both drivers started to come to grips with the boards, although Winterbottom's upbringing in the Western Suburbs of Sydney clearly not helping.
“I come from the western suburbs of Sydney and there was a lake, there was no beaches, so as you can see I’m not a beach boy at all,” he added.
Current and three-times World IronMan Champion Shannon Eckstein was pleased to show the factory Ford V8 Supercar crew his office after experiencing their world on Tuesday when he jumped behind the wheel of the Orrcon Steel V8 at the Castrol EDGE V8 Superschool.
While Winterbottom and Power certainly weren’t overnight IronMen converts, Eckstein was pleased to be able to give the drivers a better insight into the sport of Surf Lifesaving and the importance of surf rescue.
“This is what the Gold Coast has to offer: the best beaches in the world, the best weather in the world and it was good to get Frosty [Winterbottom] and Will [Power] out there and show them what we do,” commented Eckstein.
“Just like V8 Supercars, we compete in a high-risk sporting environment so it was good to get the V8 guys out there and show them the competition side, plus the Surf Lifesaving organisation with the patrols, surf rescue and so forth, to get them on a surf rescue board and show them how its done.”
“I think if Frosty does win on Saturday and Sunday the trophy will probably live at home on the mantelpiece and not in the water!”
Winterbottom also donated a surfboard he received for winning the 2009 Gold Coast V8 Supercar event behind the wheel of the Orrcon Steel FPR Ford. The surfboard, which was signed by Winterbottom, will be auctioned off at the Northcliffe SLSC’s sportsman lunch charity auction in January 2013.
All the action from the Armor All Gold Coast 600 kicks-off this Friday when crews hit the track for opening practice at 10.40am.
Armor All Gold Coast 600 is supported by the Queensland Government through Events Queensland as part of a growing calendar of sporting, cultural and regional events across the state.
