Welcome Back Winton!

February 23, 2006 - Ford Performance Racing (FPR) is delighted with the news that Victoria's Winton Raceway will return as a Championship venue on the weekend of June 2-4, 2006.

The governing body of V8 Supercar racing, V8 Supercars Australia, recently confirmed that Victoria will host a fourth V8 Supercar event in line with the Grand Prix Showcase races (March 30- April 2) the Sandown 500 (September 8-10), and the Phillip Island Grand Finale (December 8-10).

As a Victorian based team, FPR are pleased that Victorian motorsport fans have emerged as the big winners following the decision to stage a one-off event in rural Victoria this June. FPR had already committed to using the versatile Benalla race circuit as its single nominated testing circuit late last year.

FPR recognises that the re-instatement of Winton Raceway to the V8 Supercar Championship replaces the previously listed round in Shanghai, China. As almost all of FPR's major commercial partners have a significant market presence in China, the team awaits news from negotiations currently being conducted by V8 Supercars Australia with the promoter of the Shanghai Round to gain an alternate date for this special event later in the year.

According to FPR Commercial Director Rod Barrett, "The China event in 2005 was obviously a great success for FPR. We single-handily pioneered the way forward in V8 Supercar merchandise sales, and we were looking forward to returning again in 2006. Therefore we await with extreme interest, as do so many of our partners that trade in Asia, to the new 2006 date, or the continued presence at Shanghai in 2007. That aside, another local round is very satisfying to the team in terms of local exposure and support"

Winton Raceway was chosen to replace the Shanghai round following strong lobbying by local Governments and an overwhelming response from motor racing fans in the region for V8 Supercars to make a return.

Winton Raceway last hosted a V8 Supercar Championship event in 2004, attracting almost 40,000 patrons over the weekend. The track is considered one of the best in the country in terms of close racing and overtaking. It also presents major technical challenges to team engineers and drivers due to its unique layout. FPR last used this circuit as its nominated test track in 2004.

Tim Edwards, FPR's Motorsport Director is very pleased with the news, "We are obviously happy that our test circuit is now hosting a round of the Championship, this gives us and the other teams testing there a home ground advantage, just like the other teams have at their home circuits. We are more pleased for local V8 Supercar fans, as we are looking forward to giving them a home state blue oval team to cheer for on the Winton podium in June."

Winton Raceway's Chief Executive Officer Mick Ronke said the opportunity to have Australia's leading motor sport category back at the circuit was a major breakthrough for the region and country Victoria.

"We are excited about the return of V8 Supercar racing for this one off event and will be working with our local community to ensure the weekend is such a great success that V8 Supercars return each year from this point on," Mr Ronke said.
