Steve Ellery picked up six grid positions before the races even started after moving through the order in the V8 Supercar shootout.
Starting 8th on grid will give Ellery, who has a strong history at the track, a head start in chasing a second win at Sandown. But the Queenslander says it still won't be easy.
"It means I don't have to pass another six cars on the track, which helps the chase.
"The hardest thing is still going to be getting through that first corner unscathed. It should be a bit cleaner up the front the field and with a good start hopefully we can get a sniff of clean air at the front," Ellery said.
Ellery set a strong pace early and maintained a front position until the pace picked up and he was pushed back to 8th. Nontheless, it was a great improvement on his original 14th position after an almost faultless lap.
The first race starts at 2pm.
