FASTER LAMBORGHINI, PORSCHES AND VIPERS TO TEST YOUNG FERRARI STAR AT EASTERN CREEK
FROM Young Lion to Prancing Horse, 25-year-old Melbourne driver Mark Noske is hoping his switch to a $350,000 Ferrari will pay off in the second round of the Century Batteries GTP Nations Cup series this weekend at Sydney¹s Eastern Creek circuit.
Noske, who last year raced a Commodore for Holden¹s junior V8 Supercar team, the Young Lions, leads the GTP Nations Cup after winning round one in Adelaide at the wheel of his Ferrari F360 Modena Challenge, a special racing version of the famous Italian marque with the prancing horse badge.
However, technical adjustments made by the series organisers since Adelaide three weeks ago mean Noske will have a tough job defending his position in the Meguiar¹s Top Marques Drivers championship against more than 20 of the world¹s fastest and most exotic GT production cars.
In a move to ensure performance parity between competitors, the Lamborghini Diablo SVR of triple Australian driving champion Paul Stokell, winner of the first leg of the Adelaide round, has had its minimum weight limit reduced by 50 kg - although it will pay for the benefit by forsaking a small amount of engine power.
The American-built Dodge Vipers, including one to be driven in Sunday¹s two nine-lap races by national Porsche champion Geoff Morgan, have lost 45 kg while the Porsche GT3s of current GTP champion Jim Richards and others will gain speed with a new differential ratio.
Stokell, who is third in the championship but a mere three points behind Noske, believes the weight reduction will help his Lamborghini¹s brakes last longer.
³We¹ve had a brake durability problem and were worried about not being able to stop,² he said.
³Eastern Creek is a very fast circuit and with the changes to the car we hope it¹s going to suit us, but the Ferrari is going to have the best package and you can never discount Jim Richards.²
