BOWE GRABS EIGHTH AFTER PRACTICE ENGINE DRAMA
Cat Racing star John Bowe fought back to qualify 8th fastest with a new engine aboard the #600 Falcon in round four of the V8 Supercar Championship at Eastern Creek today.
After being fourth fastest in the opening practice today, Bowe had an engine failure in the opening laps of the second session, forcing the team to undertake a dramatic last minute, engine swap.
With only two hours to make the transplant, the Cat crew worked frantically to replace the engine in time for the single 25 minute qualifying session.
"We found a whole in the sump after a couple of laps of the second practice session," Bowe said.
"While it still ran, obviously something small inside had come adrift and we were forced to make the change.
"Our guys worked flat out to replace the engine I have to hand it to them, they did a great job.
"Normally I wouldn't be happy with eighth spot, but under the circumstances, it is not too bad."
Holden driver Mark Skaife took pole position ahead of team-mate Craig Lowndes.
Had the engine problem not intervened, Bowe believes he could have grabbed a higher qualifying position.
"Track-time is vital in this class and when you lose most of a session like we did, it puts you a little behind the eight-ball," Bowe said.
"The car was pretty good, but we ended up a couple of tenths of a second off where we should be."
Bowe is keen to ensure a strong run tomorrow in tomorrow's three sprint races.
"Our aim is to get a good start tomorrow and have a solid opening race," Bowe said.
"The secret in the sprint races is to try to keep your nose clean because if you pushed off the circuit, you day can be quickly ruined.
"We arrived here fresh from a good result in Adelaide, and the car has continued to feel quite strong.
"I am confident we will be able to fight back from today's dramas."
