Rain played a factor in the first qualifying for the Sydney 500.The track dried at the end but several top drivers will not have a shot at the pole; including Whincup!
Following yesterday’s heat wave at the Sydney 500 at Homebush yesterday, the V8 Supercars hit the wet track this morning after some early morning showers. The 20 minute qualifying session saw 15 drivers swap the lead. Rick Kelly in the Jack Daniels Holden was the first with 1.43.81 before Will Davison in the Trading Post Ford finished with 1.29.53 after the track dried considerably.
The Top 10 shoot out later today will see some unexpected drivers battling for pole position, including James Moffat in the Team Norton Ford, considering he clipped the wall during the latter stages.
Besides Davison, Kelly, and Moffat those who will aim for the pole include Russell Ingall (Supercheap Auto Racing), Tim Slade (Lucky 7 Racing), Michael Caruso (Fujitsu Racing GRM), Steven Johnson (Jim Beam Racing), Alexander Premat (Fujitsu Racing GRM), Shane Van Gisbergen (SP Tools Racing), and Tony D'Alberto (Team Hiflex ).
Those to miss out included Jamie Whincup (Team Vodafone), his team mate Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) and Mark Winterbottom (Orrcon Steel FPR Ford) who finished 13th, 14th, 15th and 25th respectively.
