Coulthard on Penske: Light at the end of the tunnel is bright

Fabian Coulthard says there is bright light at the end of the tunnel in terms of DJR Team Penske’s development.

Now 11 championship races into DJR Team Penske’s first season as a two-car team, and first with Coulthard behind the wheel, the Kiwi says that the team is “ahead of schedule” in terms of its developments.

The statement comes after Coulthard took the team’s third podium finish of the season at Winton on Sunday – just days before he jets off to The States to watch the Indy 500.

“DJR Team Penske its only in its infant stages so we’ve got a long way to come,” said Coulthard.

“I think the light at the end of the tunnel is pretty bright.

“I would say that we are ahead of schedule. There are some tracks coming up where Scott had good success at last year. I feel like it’s sort of started from this point in the year where the cars start to get stronger.

“But I think if you sat down with everybody at work and Tim [Cindric] and Roger [Penske] in America they would have said the amount of podiums and poles we’ve had at this point in the year that it’s ahead of schedule.

“It’s nice to be going to America with a trophy.”

BJR form to be expected

Coulthard added that it was no surprise to see his former team Brad Jones Racing clean-sweep the Winton round with new driver Tim Slade, given how much the BJR package enjoys high-grip surfaces.

“After driving that car and knowing what it’s like, high grip surface, soft tyres, it just loves it,” Coulthard said.

“I’m not surprised. I said to the boys at BJR if you’re going to have any success it’s going to be here and Darwin.

“It’s been good, but to have a fast car you’ve still got to be able to steer it and Tim did a great job.”
