Increased Advantage in Title Chase

2004 Australian Production Car Championship leader Chris Alajajian has increased his lead at round five held at Eastern Creek on July 18. Driving the Jack Hillermans Smash Repairs/Valvoline/Metacryl/Subaru Finance Subaru Liberty GT, Alajajian battled to fourth spot in race one, third in Class A, before a fighting second in race two, which was also a Class A win.

The 17-year-old was astute in qualifying, opting to go full out from the start of the session, endeavouring to beat the impending rain. Whilst nobody had a completely dry track, Alajajian chased the best of the conditions and posted the quickest time. However positioned in Class A and the APCC being a handicap formula, the Alajajian Subaru would sport the Class B cars 21 seconds start, Class C, 27seconds and another three to Class D.

The class became a three-way struggle between David Ryan's Falcon Turbo Six, Scott Loadsman's Holden Commodore SS V8 and Alajajian with the three running in tandem and climbing through the field. Ryan led the charge early with Alajajian and Loadsman chasing. The latter passed both, using the traffic to his advantage and ultimately taking the win. Alajajian lost any chance of getting second when he ran off the road at turn eleven, midway through, while attempting to negotiate slower cars. Yet he was right on the tail of the Falcon at the finish.

Because he was also racing in Formula 3 on the weekend, the young aspiring champion of the future didn't have the time to scramble from the open wheeled Dallara and take his spot on the GT Production car grid, therefore starting from pit lane. In a brilliant drive through the field, Alajajian carved his way not only to the Class A lead and victory but second outright, finishing 2.4 seconds behind race winner David Russell in one of the Protron Satria.

Outright Points: Alajajian 244, Loadsman 187, Ferrier 172, Russell 171, Ratcliff 140, Luff 121.
