V8 SUPERCAR SHELL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES RACE ONE ROUND ONE, PHILLIP ISLAND ISSUED: SATURDAY, 12th FEBRUARY, 2000
BOWE¹S EARLY ISLAND CHARGE ENDED BY TYRE PROBLEMS
Cat Racing star John Bowe made a barnstorming start to the opening race of the 2000 Shell Championship Series only to be hampered by blistered tyres.
Bowe only qualified 12th after stripping a power steering belt at the beginning of the single qualifying session.
Despite the disappointing starting position, Bowe charged on the opening lap, climbing up to and strongly challenging for fourth position before making an early compulsory pit-stop.
"³We had planned to pit early in the race, but the right rear tyre blistered very badly and we had to come in earlier than we expected,"² Bowe said.
"³The car felt good in the first couple of laps and I was able to make up quite a few spots.
"³As soon the tyres got warm, the grip went away and it was like driving on a flat tyre."
Bowe rejoined in 27th place aboard the Cat Falcon and moved up to 13th at the completion of the 45 minute event.
"³Our car is obviously very fast but it is not very kind to its rubber over long distances,"² Bowe said.
"³The whole team are working hard on solutions to try to find a more consistent race package, hopefully without losing its early pace.
"³We will get to try a couple of changes in the warm-up tomorrow morning Jand see if we can set things right for the second race in the afternoon."
The opening race of the season was won by Holden driver and defending champion Craig Lowndes ahead of Garth Tander and Mark Skaife.
"³I normally love longer races, but this was very hard work today"² Bowe said.
"³As the tyre goes off, the car doesn¹t stop as well, steer as well or accelerate as well either.
"³I drove really carefully on the second set of tyres but our pace still dropped off.
"³We were very keen to make a strong start to the year and I am hopeful we will improve."
