John Bowe pulled out a strong performance to break into the top ten in the opening race of the GMC 400 in the nation's capital, Canberra, today.
After a troubled qualifying session yesterday which left the Cat car in 18th spot, Bowe moved through to tenth at the end of the opening 25 lap race.
Bowe made his compulsory pit stop early on lap 4 to ensure the team was not caught out by a safety car incident and rejoined the race in 21st spot.
He had moved through to 14th by the time the first safety car period began on lap 11 and gained further spots on lap 18 when Steve Ellery and Todd Kelly tangled.
"The secret today was to try to keep our nose clean and we managed to achieve that," Bowe said.
"On a street circuit like Canberra it is very easy to get into trouble and although the car got a little banged up at the first corner, we had a trouble free run.
Bowe was able to hold off HRT driver Jason Bright at the end of event despite being held up by the lapped car Steven Richards.
"Steven obviously had some trouble early and was a lap down, but I couldn't find a way through," Bowe said.
"He was actually quicker in some parts of the circuit but Brighty did get close enough.
"Our car still doesn't put it's power down as well as I would like, but the guys at Briggs Motorsport will be working on some improvements overnight."
Bowe will contest a 25-lap reverse grid race tomorrow morning, followed by a 50-lap final in the afternoon.
"The grid for the 50 lapper will comes from the results of the two 25 laps races, so it will be vital to do well in the reverse grid race," Bowe said.
"Our aim is to continue to have a trouble free run. I am quite pleased with today's result, but tomorrow is where most of the points are on offer."
