Cat Racing's John Bowe will start from position 18 in the first of this weekend's three races at the GMC 400 in Canberra after a tough time in qualifying today.

The Cat team endured a troubled morning with a sticking throttle hampering the morning efforts and a clutch problem striking the team in the single 55 minute qualifying session.

"We lost the clutch early in the session and I had to drive without it on the down-changes," Bowe said.

"It probably cost a couple of tenths of a second, but the biggest problem was losing a bit of track time.

"We really didn't get the set-up right - that is where the time difference comes from.

"Obviously I am disappointed, but we have to put our heads down and try and get our strategy right for the rest of the weekend."

The V8 Supercar teams will contest a 25 lap race tomorrow afternoon. Sunday's race program includes a 25 lap reverse grid race as well as 50 lap final event.

"We have a lot of laps ahead of us over the weekend, so there is plenty of opportunity to move forward if you can keep out of trouble," Bowe said.

"That will be half the battle this weekend. The track is so tight and there is so much concrete around the place - there is going to be a lot of guys getting into trouble."

Bowe was one of several top drivers to miss tomorrow's top-15 shoot-out. Other leading lights included Larry Perkins, David Besnard and Jason Bright.

Despite today's disappointment, Bowe is still looking forward to the weekend ahead.

"I really enjoy street circuits and the lay-out of this circuit is really quite interesting," Bowe said.

"They have widened it in a number of places which has improved it a little, but it is still very hard to pass.

"Pit stops are going to be critical and all our guys at Briggs Motorsport are looking forward to the challenge."
