McLean Stars With Fastest Falcon At AGP

V.I.P. Pet Foods' Cameron McLean was in dazzling form with the fastest lap by a Ford driver on the Fosters Australian Grand Prix track in Melbourne today - but a foggy windscreen dashed the Queenslander's vision of a top 10 finish in race two of the Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown.

Running in damp but drying conditions, McLean's best lap time of 2 minutes 9.08 seconds was the fastest of all Ford Falcon drivers, the fastest of all drivers on wet-weather tyres and the third fastest overall in the field of 34 starters.

He started the 12-lap race from 16th on the grid, but almost immediately fell back as the windscreen fogged up due to a faulty electric demister.

"I just couldn't see and was driving by the brake lights of the cars in front. That's a good way to wreck the car so I had to pit after the second lap and have the screen wiped inside.

"It stayed clear after that and I was able to get stuck in, but unfortunately I was by then pretty much at the back of the pack and ended up 29th at the finish."

McLean was deeply disappointed with the finishing position, which will be his grid spot for tomorrow's final race, but Paragon Motorsport team manager Ross Dillon saw it as an encouraging performance.

"We all hoped Cameron would be able to finish today higher up than he started, but it wasn't to be because of a simple, minor fault," Dillon said.

"But that was a fantastic drive. He was really, really flying in the final laps and caught Paul Morris and Max Wilson.

"There were only two drivers who lapped faster, Cameron McConville and Todd Kelly, who were both in Holdens and on slick tyres.

"We go to Adelaide in two weeks for the first round of the V8 Supercar championship knowing that our new V.I.P. Pet Foods Falcon and our driver are both right on the money."

In addition to V.I.P. Pet Foods, the Paragon Motorsport Ford Falcon V8 Supercar is sponsored by All Power Steering, Eibach Springs, Freightliner Trucks, Jade Engineering, PPG Paints, Revolution Racegear, Screen Offset Printing, Snap-on Tools, Spandex, Street Smart Designs, Wurth and Cox Lawn Care Products.

TIMETABLE: Sunday, 10.37 Race 3 (10 laps).
