V8 SUPERCARS FLY AT CALDER DURING PRE-QUALIFYING
July 13, 2001 - Shell Championship Series V8 Supercar action returned to Melbourne's Calder Park Raceway today, the start of a massive weekend of motorsport.
Accompanied by Formula Ford, Formula Holden, HQ Holdens and Saloon Cars, the start of the 25th anniversary of Championship racing at Calder was as competitive as ever, particularly during V8 Supercar pre-qualifying.
The short fifteen minute pre-qualifying session saw ten V8 Supercar drivers competing fiercely for the seven remaining positions on Sunday's race grid, in damp conditions.
Kiwi Jason Richards topped the timesheets in the Team Kiwi VT Commodore with a lap time on 1:04.1294s ahead of Sydney RPM International team driver Dean Canto in an AU Falcon. Tomas Mezera was third fastest in the Imrie Motorsport VT Commodore.
The other V8 Supercar drivers who have made the 32 car grid for Round 7 include Matthew White, Anthony Tratt, Paul Romano and Dugal McDougal.
In the support categories, young Mildura driver Rick Kelly topped the Formula Holden timesheets from American Emerson Newton-John (nephew of Olivia Newton-John) and Melbourne driver Peter Hill.
Formula Ford drivers Will Davison, Justin Cotter and Jamie Whincup were the class of the field and HQ Holden drivers Mark Wicks and Travis Lindorff topped the times.
Saloon car drivers Bruce Henrich,Vince Gatt and Scott Bargwanna - all in EA Falcons - took the top three positions after their third practice session today.
It is a weekend of major motor racing action ahead at Calder Park, starting tomorrow with V8 Supercar practice at 9.15am followed by a second practice session at 11:15am leading into the all important qualifying sessions starting at 2:15pm.
**Calder Park Shell Championship Series Round 7 - July 14-15 - General Information:**
Calder Park Raceway is located 24 kilometres west of Melbourne in an easy drive along the Calder Freeway. Abundant free parking is available at the venue.
Shuttle buses will be operating on raceday, Sunday July 15, from St Albans Railway Station starting at 9:00am, with the last bus leaving Calder Park for St Albans Station at 5:35pm.
Adult tickets are available from Ticketec: Saturday $25 each (plus $10 pit access), Sunday $35 each (plus $15 pit access) with children 13 years of age and under admitted free of charge in line with Calder Park Motorsport policy. Tickets will also be available at Calder Park.
