Ford Tickford Racing's Glenn Seton took the first step towards winning Sunday's V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst's Mt Panorama when he took provisional pole today. Seton is having his 18th start in Australia's toughest motorsport event, has only finished seven times. His best finish ever was in 1987 when he finished second in a Nissan with John Bowe and his most frustrating result was in 1997 when his engine expired with nine laps remaining.
Seton clocked a time of 2:09.6770 around the 6.213km circuit and was followed by fellow Ford driver Craig Lowndes (2:09.8533) and the Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife (2:099671).
While the efforts of the top three cars were impressive yesterday, they will all count for nothing after this morning's Top 15 Shootout, which will determine the starting grid at the sharp end of the field. Each of the top 15 qualifiers will do one flying lap and the quickest will claim pole.
Ironically, the winners of the previous three V8 Supercar 1000 have started from a starting position of 10th or worse. In the 40-year history of the event only eight drivers have won the race from pole position.
