CENTURY BATTERIES BATHURST 3-HOUR SHOWROOM SHOWDOWN - NOVEMBER 14

QUALIFYING REPORT 13th November 1998

BOSNJAK AND BENINCA BLAST THEIR WAY AROUND THE MOUNTAIN

Mazda RX7 pilot Terry Bosnjak and recently crowned 1998 GTP production champion Domenic Beninca headed the battle for provisional pole position in the opening qualifying session for this weekend's Century Batteries 3-Hour Bathurst Showroom Showdown.

Bosnjak stormed his way around Mount Panorama to set the fastest time of 2:25.002 while Beninca battled to find a gap in traffic to be second fastest.

Beninca's Porsche 911 RSCS pipped the Maserati Ghibli shared by Alfredo Costanzo and Matt Coleman at the end of the opening session to push his way through to second.

"It is nice to be on provisional pole so far but we came here to win the race, not to simply put the car on pole - we still have a lot of work to do," Bosnjak said.

"The car feels really strong but I was still held up slightly on my quickest lap.

"With 50 cars on the grid, fighting your way through traffic is not easy."

The Peter Fitzgerald/Jim Richards Porsche 911 RSCS was fourth ahead of Neil Crompton and Darren Palmer aboard the Ferrari F355 Challenge.

Class B is looming as a tough battle with the first three cars split by less than a second. Damien White set the fastest time in the Subaru Impreza WRX he will share with Jim Zerefos from the Dean Canto/Paul Dumbrell machine fought back from yesterday's turbo dramas to be second fastest.

Iron Man Grant Kenny improved to be only 3/10ths of a second behind his team-mate Scott Jacob aboard their Subaru Impreza WRX.

David Ratcliff and Ron Searle topped the Class C times aboard their Toyota Camry CSi, eclipsing the Ford Falcon AU XR6 of AFL media star Sam Newman and Iron Man Guy Andrews.

The new model XR8 of David Bruce and John McIlroy were third fastest.

Phil Kirkham and Matt Lehmann again headed the GTP Lights Class D division with third driver Megan Kirkham also getting the chance to drive the Mazda 626.

Aaron McGill and Don Pulver were fastest in Class E aboard their Suzuki Swift GTi while the Nigel Williams/Brian Callaghan Suzuki was able to continue despite a heavy impact with the wall.

Michael Simpson and Beric Lynton's BMW 323i are the car to watch in the new GTP Sports - Class S division, toppling their Toyota MR2 mounted opposition.
