TODD KELLY BOOKS SHOOTOUT APPEARANCE WITH EIGHTH IN BATHURST QUALIFYING
Jack Daniel's Racing driver Todd Kelly has booked he and brother Rick's new V8 Supercar team a Top 10 Shootout appearance after setting the eighth fastest time in qualifying for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama today.
The elder of the Kelly brothers took on the bulk of the workload aboard the #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore today and one of the pacesetters in qualifying around the daunting 6.213-kilometre circuit.
Todd Kelly is now determined to make further improvements overnight with the view of qualifying as highly as possible in tomorrow's Top 10 Shootout.
Meanwhile, Rick Kelly was behind the wheel in the opening practice session of the day, working on race set up with heavy fuel loads and older, worn tyres.
In an encouraging sign for the lead Jack Daniel's Racing pairing, the dual Bathurst winner set a time of 2min8.5061secs in race trim, only half a tenth of a second shy of the race lap record set by Jamie Whincup in 2007 (2:08.4651).
Endurance specialists Nathan Pretty and Ben Collins will start this year's Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 from 24th position on the 32-car grid after Pretty put in a solid performance today in the #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore.
Jason Richards earned provisional pole in qualfying at Bathurst today ahead of tomorrow afternoon's Top 10 Shootout, topping the timesheets in his Commodore ahead of fellow Holden drivers Garth Tander and Lee Holdsworth.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
QUESTION: It's a long race so starting position isn't everything, but clearly the goal for you today was to book an appearance in the Top 10 Shootout for tomorrow and you've done that, so you must be pleased.
"We were doing it reasonably easy at the start of the session in the Jack Daniel's Commodore," said Todd Kelly.
"We just had a few little things that we were playing around with later in the session that we probably went the wrong way on, which probably made it a bit worse, so I was reasonably lucky to set a better time there to get back up the order and lock us in."
"Tomorrow we will sort things and aim to improve in practice before the Shootout. We will give the car a bit more of a tune and I think we will be looking pretty good."
QUESTION: Are you really concentrating on the Top 10 Shootout now or does your focus turn towards the race?
"This race now is so competitive that if you start in the top two or three, or if you start in ninth or 10th, it makes a massive difference to your race.
"So we will put a fair bit into qualifying to try and get the Jack Daniel's Commodore as close to the front as we can."
Rick Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"We're extremely happy with that," said Rick Kelly.
"We've got a couple of little things that we need to work on with the car, but they're easy fixes to be honest so I'm pretty happy with that.
"I watched the first session of qualifying from The Chase and it gives you a whole different perspective on what the cars actually look like.
"They look very different to what they feel like inside.
"It's a good day for us and I'm very comfortable in the car. Todd has got some good pace in qualifying so I think we are setting ourselves up for a good weekend.
"For me personally, my session this morning was about getting us a good race car, and on old tyres I did a 2min8sec lap, which is close to the race lap record, so if we can do those sorts of times in the race, if the conditions are right, we should be in a position to fight for a good place.
"That was my main job today, to get a good race set-up, and so far we are going OK in that area. Todd's job was to focus on the qualifying and he has done a good job with that as well.
"We haven't won the race yet certainly, but we're moving in a positive direction for Sunday."
