MAZDA LOOMS AS POTENTIAL MOUNTAIN MASTER

Terry Bosnjak and V8 Supercar star Thomas Mezera look set to challenge for outright success in Saturday's Century Batteries 3-Hour Bathurst Showroom Showdown after setting the second fastest time in practice at Mount Panorama today.

After the morning session was curtailed due to heavy fog, the afternoon practice session was headed by the Porsche 911 RSCS of Peter Fitzgerald and Jim Richards with Bosnjak and Mezera close behind.

With the damp track gradually drying throughout the session, Mezera gradually improved to stop the clocks at 2:31.052.

"It takes a little while to get used to because it is my first time in a production car," Mezera said.

"It is certainly very different to drive than my V8 Supercar but I am enjoying the challenge."

The Ed Aitken/Kevin Weeks Porsche 911 RSCS was third fastest ahead of the Toyota Supra RZ Twin Turbo of Jamie Cartwright and Christian D'Agostin.

The Nissan Skyline GT-R of John Teulan and Paul Morris also ran strongly before suffering turbo dramas.

Also in the wars was the Class B Subaru Impreza WRX of Craig Harris who tagged the wall in his car he will share with Gary Deane.

The Class B pace was headed by the HSV GTS-R of John Cowley and Wayne Park. The powerful V8 machine outpaced the turbo machines including the Mark King/Rod Wilson (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III) and the Subaru Impreza WRX of Jim Zerefos and Damien White.

GTP debutants David Bruce and John McIlroy headed the Class C times aboard their new Ford Falcon AU XR8. Rally ace Steve Winwood and Tim Leahey were second fastest aboard an EL model XR8 while AFL media star Sam Newman and Iron Man Guy Andrews were third fastest aboard a Falcon AU XR6.

Phil Kirkham and Matt Lehmann headed a trio of Mazda 626s in Class D while Aaron McGill and Don Pulver topped the Class E times aboard their Suzuki Swift GTi.

Kosi Kalaitzidis' weekend got off to a bad start when he crashed his Class E Proton M21 Coupe.
