Lowndes sixth fastest in V8 Supercars first look at Bahrain International Circuit
After topping the time sheets for the majority of the first part of today's extended practice session at the Bahrain International Circuit, Team Betta Electrical's Craig Lowndes has ended the day recording the sixth fastest time of 1.24.7532 while team mate Jamie Whincup finished in 11th place.
The championship contender sat sidelined in his team garage for 40 minutes of the second part of the session while his Triple Eight crew changed a front rocker and pull rod in the engine of car #888.
Despite this minor setback, Lowndes said he was encouraged by the knowledge that Garth Tander was the only driver to go quicker than him during his limited time on track within the second session.
"This circuit is quite amazing, it is very smooth and has quite a lot of grip and our car is very good thru turn 4, 5 and 6 which is the flowing part of the circuit\," Lowndes said.
"I had a great first session but unfortunately we did lose a lot of set-up time in the second session while the team changed a front rocker and pull rod. Once we got out there Garth (Tander) was the only driver to go quicker that us during that time."
"We have a bit of work to do as the car as it is still hard on brakes, it is good for one lap but for the race we will have to work on the rear of the car as we have quite a bit of over steer which could make 37 laps interesting if we don't get on top of it."
"We will definitely have to look after the rear tyres, they are good for a few laps then drop off quickly before finding their consistency," Lowndes commented.
Team mate Jamie Whincup circulated inside the top ten for most of the limited lap's sessions until a minor on track altercation with Mark Skaife sent him back to the garage to replace a front splitter.
"This is a fantastic facility," Whincup said. "The track is surprisingly clean with good tight corners and excellent fast corners."
"Today was about experimenting with qualifying setups and with getting new tyres for practice, we were able to have a decent learning session."
"We don't quite have the desired speed we are looking for but as always we are predicting a very fast race car," Whincup concluded.
