Tasman hunt for grip in Bahraini desert

Tasman Motorsport drivers Jason Richards and Andrew Jones have had a tough introduction to the Bahrain International Circuit on the opening day of practice for the Bahrain Desert 400.

While both drivers generally struggled today with the 20th and 24th fastest times respectively, it wasn't the only problem.

Jones is wearing a helmet borrowed from his uncle Brad for the weekend, after his regular 'lid' was taken from his #23 Commodore somewhere in transit.

At least able to take to the circuit with his borrowed helmet, Jones and the Tasman team has begun an overnight search for speed before qualifying and the opening race tomorrow.

"We anticipated the track to have a lot more grip than we found it had once we got out there. I would have much preferred the long track and some of its sweeping corners! But there's no doubt there will be plenty of interesting racing on this version of the track. There are some big stops that are hard on the brakes for sure. We made some pretty massive changes to the setup during the day but our position stayed pretty much stagnant, which is never good."

Andrew Jones (#23 Superservice Menus/Tasman Motorsport Commodore VZ)

"There wasn't a lot of grip at the start and we spent plenty of time in the session changing the car. In fact, we spent too much time because I only made it back out with the new tyres on with three minutes to go in practice for the day. I only got one lap on them and the second lap would have been a little better. We have a direction to go in for tomorrow, so we're not throwing the weekend away as yet as being a write-off."
