SBR hot on the pace at the Desert 400
Stone Brothers Racing was hot on the pace in yesterday's opening practice at the Desert 400, JELD-WEN Motorsport's James Courtney setting the fifth fastest time, closely followed by his SP Tools Racing team-mate Shane van Gisbergen in sixth.
Courtney's first session was interrupted as the JELD-WEN Motorsport crew ironed out a problem with the gearbox, the Gold Coast-based driver pushing the issue aside to set the third fastest time in the first 30-minute session.
Courtney resumed part three of practice with a new gearbox and continued where he left off, cementing his place within the top five, finally settling with the fifth fastest time.
Van Gisbergen also had a strong session remaining in the top fifteen throughout the two-and-a-quarter-hour practice.
The 19-year-old jumped up the order late in the final 75-minute session when he put on new tyres and made big gains in the SP Tools Racing Falcon, van Gisbergen posting the sixth fastest time at the flag.
The JELD-WEN Motorsport and SP Tools Racing Falcons will hit the track at 11:30am today for qualifying, followed by race one at 3:00pm.
James Courtney, #4, JELD-WEN Motorsport Falcon
"We had a problem early on with the gearbox in the JELD-WEN Falcon but we changed that in the break between the sessions and things improved from there.
"The car was pretty good, and we ar e particularly happy with how it is on old tyres.
"We didn't get a great run on our green tyres at the end with a bit of traffic to deal with and yellow flags.
"We were in the top five today so I'm sure that we can move forward from there tomorrow."
Shane van Gisbergen, #9, SP Tools Racing Falcon
"The SP Tools Racing Falcon was great today.
"We put the first set of tyres to good use and really progressed with the car.
"Once we put on the second set we made a huge gain in time.
"We all worked well together today, my engineers and the SP Tools crew, and made all the right steps to get the car heading in the right direction.
"I hope that we can make the top ten in qualifying tomorrow; if we can do the job we will have a great start for the weekend."
