Whincup second in hard fought opening leg of the Sucrogen Townsville 400
TeamVodafone duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes endured a hard fought opening leg of the Sucrogen Townsville 400, taking the chequered flag second and fourth.
Whincup extended his championship lead, finishing two spots in front of his teammate while Lowndes found himself embroiled in an all out war for third, eventually crossing the line fourth.
The #88 driver topped the timesheets in qualifying, taking provisional pole position, but he wasn't able repeat the feat in the Top Ten Shootout. Whincup ended the session with the second fastest time.
Teammate Craig Lowndes didn't enjoy the same qualifying good fortune, posting the fifth fastest time of the session. The #888 driver gained a position in Top Ten Shootout and started the 72 lap race from the second row of the grid.
Whincup now sits 174 points clear of Lowndes in the championship standings.
The Townsville Sucrogen 400 will conclude tomorrow with qualifying for Race 15 at 11.40am (AEST) ahead of the final 200km race of the weekend to get underway at 3.35pm (AEST).
