Cat Racing's John Bowe today powered his way into the top six in qualifying for this weekend¹s V8 Supercar events at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Bowe stopped the clocks at 1:59.761, despite battling a handling imbalance in the Ford Falcon AU.
"I'm pleased to qualify near the front, but the car is oversteering very badly," Bowe said.
"We improved the car from the morning practice session, but the rear end of the car still wants to break loose when I get back on the throttle coming off the turns.
"You have to wait until the car straightens up before you can really jump on the accelerator.
"This is the first time our team has run the AU Falcon here at Albert Park and we still learning all the time.
"I'm confident we can find some improvements for tomorrow's race."
With heavy traffic on the circuit, getting a clear lap in qualifying was also tough for the V8 Supercar field.
"I got one clear lap when I set my fastest time, but kept getting balked when I went out to try again on the second set of tyres," Bowe said.
"Because the track isn¹t used all year round, the surface is really greasy for the first couple of days until it gets plenty of race traffic on it including the Formula One cars."
Getting a clear lap in traffic was the secret for pole sitter Mark Skaife who qualified more than 1 second in front of Garth Tander.
Bowe is confident of pulling off a strong result in the trio of races scheduled for the remaining three days of the Formula One Grand Prix program.
"I¹ve always had pretty good results here at Albert Park and I would love to head for Perth for round two of the series next weekend with some strong finishes under our belt," Bowe said.
"Getting a good start here is pretty vital because the field can tend to become a bit of a freight train at this track.
"We always great crowds at the GP so it would be really nice to put on a good show for the race fans."
