Live Sandown 500 to Head PROCAR Championship Motor Racing Telecasts on SBS Speedweek in 2002

Live coverage of the Sandown 500 endurance classic will feature in a record schedule of free-to-air programming for PROCAR Australia motor racing series on the SBS television network this year.

Year one of a three-year agreement between series organiser PROCAR and SBS Speedweek will deliver up to 50 hours of first-run coverage over 30 weekends to viewers in every State and Territory.

PROCAR editions of one and two hours hosted by the long-running SBS program Speedweek will showcase five of Australia's most popular national motorsport series -
* Australian Nations Cup Championship
* GT Performance Series (High Performance class of the Australian GT Production Car Championship)
* GT Production Series (Sports Touring, V8 Touring, 6-Cylinder Touring and 4-Cylinder Touring classes of the Australian GT Production Car Championship)
* V8 BRute Muster
* Australian Formula 3 Championship

Additionally, the PROCAR Speedweek editions will be shown on the Fox Sports cable network in Australia, New Zealand's Saturn cable network and via satellite on Australia Television into South-east Asia, through arrangements with the show's independent producer, AVE Productions.

A 5.5-hour telecast on Sunday 8 September will feature live coverage of the 35th Sandown 500 kilometre race for Nations Cup and GT Performance cars, plus the previous day's two-hour Showroom Showdown for GT Production cars.

PROCAR Australia Chairman Ross Palmer said the SBS agreement ensured unprecedented coverage of the organisation's various racing series for showroom-production cars and its PROCAR Championship Series meetings.

"We're very happy with this deal, which will deliver 400,000 loyal Speedweek viewers every week and give us many more hours on air than we've ever had," he said.

"For the next three years, all our PROCAR categories and our associated series Formula 3 will have a pre-set telecast schedule on a free-to-air network with a long record of committment to motorsport," Mr Palmer said.

"Since PROCAR launched the GT Production Car Championship in 1996, our concept of racing volume-produced popular cars with high consumer relevance and appeal has been extremely successful.

"The pressure of competitors wanting to be part of it has forced us to expand from one series to four - with significant manufacturer support - and the fan base has shown similar growth.

"From the highly-successful example of Speedweek, which has been on air continuously for eight years, we have tremendous faith in the ability of SBS to help accelerate our continued growth across a wide area of the nation.

"In addition, the network has agreed to a promotional plan to ensure the news of its expanded motorsport coverage reaches an even bigger audience.

"This deal will build our fan support even further and give competitors and sponsors the confidence to invest in our series."

Sydney-based AVE Productions will produce the Speedweek PROCAR editions, with support from PROCAR Australia to achieve enhanced production standards. This includes use of the advanced Megamantis Mini Caster and Globe Caster production equipment, with web-casting capability.

The shows will bring viewers the spectacle of some of the world's greatest performance cars - plus iconic Aussie utes and popular family cars - being raced by well-known drivers such as John Bowe, Jim Richards, Grant Kenny, Dean Canto and Paul Stokell.

In particular, Mr Palmer said, SBS's audience was expected to welcome the on-screen appearance of Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Vipers and other exotics from around the world in the Nations Cup and the exciting open-wheel cars in the Formula 3 Championship, which is the only current international class on Australian tracks. <pre> 2002 PROCAR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES SBS TV Speedweek Broadcast Schedule
