CENTURY BATTERIES AUSTRALIAN GT PRODUCTION CAR CHAMPIONSHIP
ETSA POWER GTP - SENSATIONAL ADELAIDE 500 11th APRIL 1999
HAIRPIN CLASH OUSTS RICHARDS AS AITKEN WINS
Jim Richards' chances of a clean sweep of victories was ruined by a spectacular clash with rival Ed Aitken in the final ETSA Power GTP event at the Sensational Adelaide 500 today.
Richards was pushed hard by fellow Porsche 911 RSCS driver Ed Aitken in the opening laps with Aitken making his way past with four laps remaining.
Aitken subsequently ran wide at the hairpin at the end of the main straight after Richards made a challenge to regain the lead.
After bouncing off the outside kerb, Aitken spun into the side of Richards, eliminating the six time Bathurst winner with a flat tyre.
Aitken ran through to take the victory ahead of Beric Lynton's BMW M3-R and Geoff Morgan's Porsche 911 RSCS.
While Aitken was pleased to take the victory, he was disappointed with the way it happened.
"I was trying hard to chase Jimmy down because I thought I had a tyre advantage and found a way through in traffic when he got balked by a slower car," Aitken said.
"I ran in a little deep when Jim tried to challenge and the car bounced sideways off the kerb and in to Jim.
"It was a really unfortunate way to win the race because Jim and I are really good mates."
Terry Bosnjak fought back from his engine dramas to complete his only race for the weekend with a down-on- power engine aboard his Mazda RX-7 SP Turbo.
Geoff "Gilligan" Full took his third successive Class B victory aboard his Subaru Impreza WRX but not before being half-spun at the first chicane and striking the tyres marking the inside of the corner.
Local Class C ace Rob Chadwick celebrated his debut victory in the new 3.5 litre Mitsubishi Magna TH Sports. David Ratcliff (Toyota Camry CSi) took second ahead of Friday night winner Mark Cohen (Holden Commodore VS SS).
Michael Simpson was again successful in Class S aboard his BMW 323i.
Young Adelaide driver Craig Dontas celebrated his GTP debut aboard his Suzuki Swift GTi with a victory in the final race of the weekend.
Sue Hughes took second aboard her Suzuki while Kosi Kalaitzidis' Proton M21 Coupe was outed with a broken clutch.
