Chaz Mostert was comfortably fastest in the opening V8 Supercars practice session of the weekend at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The Prodrive Ford driver left his run late, going fastest right at the flag with a 1m58.283s lap.
That put him a whopping 0.672s clear of the rest of the field.
Red Bull Racing Australia’s new signing was second fastest, and had looked on for P1 before Mostert’s last-gasp effort.
Jason Bright was third fastest for Brad Jones Racing, ahead of points leader Michael Caruson (Nissan), and reigning champion Mark Winterbottom.
Garth Tander was sixth, and best of the Holden Racing Team cars after James Courtney ran off at Turn 13 on his final flying lap. That left the Clipsal Saturday race winner way back in 20th.
Craig Lowndes was seventh, making Jamie Whincup the slowest of the Triple Eight drivers back in 11th.
James Moffat was the best Volvo in ninth, three spots clear of team-mate Scott McLaughlin, while the Penske pair of Scott Pye and Fabian Coulthard were way back in 22nd and 23rd after both having trouble at Turn 3.
