VAN GISBERGEN RESERVES PLACE IN AGP SHOOTOUT
After a quick turnaround from the Adelaide, Clipsal 500 earlier this month the V8 Supercars took to the track today for Practice and Qualifying on Day 1 of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. The earlier 30 minute Practice session saw SBR a bit off the pace until things picked up in the afternoon's Qualifying with Shane van Gisbergen reserving his place in tomorrow's Top Ten Shootout after posting the 10th quickest time of the session.
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison and Wilson Security Racing's Tim Slade finished qualifying in 17th and 19th respectively at the conclusion of the 30 minutes.
Shane van Gisbergen - Driver, SP Tools Racing Car #9
"We didn't really have good tyres for practice and that sort of hurt us a bit in the first session but we had a good idea where the car was so we tuned it up before qualifying.
"In qualifying we ran the practice tyres to start with and we were pretty average but when we changed to new ones the car was awesome. I made a mistake on my first flying lap and on the second lap I felt I drove better but the tyres were sort of going away. Luckily it was a good enough time to stay in the top ten.
"Even though there are no points up for grabs this weekend I will still be pushing hard. We have our sponsors here and will be looking to put on a good show which we always do."
Tim Slade - Driver, Wilson Security Racing Car #47
"I'm pretty happy with how qualifying went, I felt the best I have in the car so far this year, it was like second nature. We made a change to the car halfway through the session and picked up time which proves that Wes [McDougall] and I are working really well together.
"It was extremely close, two tenths, and I would have been 10th or 11th, there is not much in it and around a long track like this it just shows how competitive the series is."
Alex Davison - Driver, IRWIN Racing Car #4
"We just weren't quick enough. We are taking this weekend seriously but did treat today as a bit of a test session. Tomorrow we will just chip away and try and come away with the best result possible."
Tomorrow the V8 Supercars will hit the track for the Top Ten Shoot -Out at 3:00pm, before Race 1 at 6:15pm AEDT.
