Bowe Takes One-Point Nations Cup Lead Over Stokell In Battle Of Italian Exoticars
JOHN Bowe and Paul Stokell, each driving $700,000 coupes from rival Italian manufacturers, scored a win and second place apiece in a thrilling day of competition for round one of the 2002 Australian Nations Cup Championship at the Adelaide Parklands circuit today.
Bowe, in a Ferrari Michelotto won the first 12-lap race from Stokell, in a Lamborghini, and ended up one point ahead in the championship by virtue of his pole position in qualifying yesterday.
Stokell won the second race and the pair are set for a showdown in the third leg tomorrow.
Race one was one of the most exciting contests seen in the two-year-old series for exotic GT sports cars.
Jim Richards made an early break from second grid spot in his Porsche GT3 Cup, followed by Geoff Morgan in a Chrysler Viper, then Bowe and Stokell. As Morgan was shuffled back, Richards, Bowe and Stokell became locked in a nose-to-tail battle for several laps.
Stokell made a breathtaking 200 kmh pass on Bowe on the outside of the main straight sweeper, only to be overtaken again under brakes for the next corner.
Stokell used the Lamborghini's massive V12 power to sweep by again on the last lap and then to take Richards.
Bowe followed, with the gap to Stokell at the finish just 1.48 seconds and Richards a further 0.10 sec. behind.
Race two was less dramatic, with Bowe beating pole-sitter Stokell to the first corner and leading throughout.
Stokell tried repeatedly but was unable to pass the Ferrari, while Morgan beat Richards into third place.
Today's races saw the debut of the new Group Two class, which was won by AFL personality Sam Newman, in a Ferrari 360 Challenge. This was Newman's best performance in Nations Cup.
Prancing Horse Ferrari teammates John Teulan and Steve Beards were second and third.
