King wins first round in GTP title defence
DEFENDING Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car champion Mark King took up where he left off at the end of last year by wrapping up round one of the 2001 season in Adelaide today.
King started the second-leg race from third grid position in his Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo V, but took the lead on the first of 12 laps and was never headed.
Bob Hughes finished 4.9 seconds behind in a new Lancer Evo VI, with third-placed series newcomer Brett Peters in a Subaru WRX completing the dominance of the Japanese all-wheel drive turbo cars over the more fancied V8 Commodores.
King's win, following a third placing in yesterday's first leg race, also gave him the lead in the Poolrite High Performance class. A giant-killing drive by Anthony Robson in a Toyota MR2 was rewarded with the Poolrite Sports Touring class win and points lead.
King said he had been confident of beating the 400 horsepower HSV Commodores, five of which have entered this year's championship.
"I've raced on the Adelaide street circuit quite a few times and have learned how to set up the Mitsubishi, but the Commodores are heavy and hard on their brakes here," King said. "However, we've got seven rounds to go and I predict we're going to have to fight very hard to win the championship again." <pre> RESULTS, Race 2 (12 laps): Outright 1.
