Pilkington Wins First Gtp Handicap Race
DEFENDING class champion Nathan Pilkington drove from behind to win the first outright points in the 2002 Australian GT Production Car Championship on the Adelaide Parklands street circuit today.
Following a new handicap format, the Sports Touring class cars including Pilkington's Mitsubishi FTO started 23 seconds behind the slower 4-Cylinder Touring cars.
Pilkington was fifth off the grid while the 4-Cylinder pole-sitter Kosi Kalaitzidis took the lead in his Proton.
Pilkington, from Sydney, worked his way past Martin Doxey (Holden Astra), Rick Bates (Daihatsu Sirion) and David Runkel (Proton Satria) until he took Kalaitzidis on the sixth of seven laps.
Steve Cramp finished third in a BMW, ahead of Aaron McGill in a Toyota Celica.
The GT Production cars will race again tomorrow.
