TEAM-WORK GIVES NEW EXCITEMENT TO KELLY BROTHERS AHEAD OF CLIPSAL 500
V8 Supercar brothers Todd and Rick Kelly say that the hard work put in over the off-season to form the new-look Jack Daniel's Racing team has given them new levels of excitement ahead of the first race of the season.
'The Kelly Gang' will take to the track at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide this weekend in two brand new Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodores, as part of a new, four-car operation formed by the former Bathurst winners, Kelly Racing.
It will be the first time that Todd, 29, and Rick, 26, will compete against each other as team-mates after seven seasons racing together in the V8 Supercar Championship Series.
The only previous occasion that the brothers from Mildura in rural Victoria drove in the same team was in 2006 when the pair teamed up for the Bathurst and Sandown endurance events, finishing second in both races.
This season sees the pair not only team up on the race track, but also join forces as a major part of the day-to-day operations of Kelly Racing, which opened a new, state-of-the-art workshop in Braeside, Melbourne earlier this month, where both Jack Daniel's Racing Commodores are housed.
Both Todd and Rick have enviable records in the Clipsal 500, with Rick taking out the prestigious event in 2007 in his first race with the #1 aboard his Holden after winning his first V8 Supercar Championship.
Todd also netted his best Clipsal 500 result that year, winning the Saturday race and finishing second to Rick on Sunday.
Between the two brothers, the Kelly family have collected six Clipsal 500 podium trophies, with Rick Kelly on a streak of seven straight top 10 finishes at the Adelaide event and Todd Kelly boasting 10 top 10 finishes from his past 12 Adelaide races.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore
"I guess for us just getting to Adelaide is a great achievement, with this being the first time that Todd and myself, the family and this whole group of guys have run our own show," said Rick Kelly.
"I'm pretty excited about it all. It's probably the most excited I've ever been heading into Clipsal.
"To get all the work done, get the cars ready and have the team in the condition it's in, which is fantastic, is a great achievement and something I'm proud of and we're all very excited about.
"The Clipsal 500 is one of the events I enjoy most. I love street circuits and the nature of the track makes for exciting racing. Clipsal combines stop-go corners and fast sweeping corners, and with a lot of overtaking opportunities the track always keeps the drivers and teams on their toes.
"It's also traditionally one of our hottest race meetings, and with concrete barriers preventing the hot air from escaping the track surface, the cockpit can reach over 60 degrees.
"Being the first round, it's always interesting to see who is strong out of the box and who has done the most effective preparation over the off season."
Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore
"Both Rick and I have a brand new Jack Daniel's Commodore for Clipsal," said Todd Kelly.
"We've only really done a 20-lap shakedown day and one test day, so we haven't really had the cars on good tyres and in a racing environment.
"We don't really know what to expect from the new cars so it's going to be a huge learning curve for us at Clipsal.
"The biggest thing is to survive the weekend and come out with some points.
"It's hard for the drivers to have a busy offseason and go into what is the hardest race of our calendar.
"There are a few things that are a little foreign to me as well.
"Having my brother Rick next to me in a Jack Daniel's car is something new. For the very for time in our careers we are in the same team so that's going to be interesting.
"So far we are getting along well and on the whole the entire Kelly Racing group is working together extremely well."
