Cat Racing star John Bowe shone bright as the leading Ford driver after qualifying fifth fastest for tomorrow's opening race of the V8 Supercar Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide.
Bowe was seventh fastest in the final qualifying session but set a time of 1:26.751 to move to fifth during the top-ten shoot-out which decided the final grid positions.
Bowe out-paced fellow Ford driver Glenn Seton who had been second fastest in the final session while another member of the blue oval brigade - Paul Radisich - failed to finish his hot-lap after suffering electrical problems.
Radisich had been the fastest driver during the final session.
"We are obviously very pleased with the result, which was better than the team had expected," Bowe said.
"I put a good neat lap together and it is nice to start towards the front after having a run of pretty awful luck to start the year.
"Paul was obviously unlucky, but we have been on that end of the luck stakes many times so far this year.
"In long distance races, qualifying is less important, but it has given the team morale a real boost."
Holden driver Garth Tander grabbed pole position ahead of Mark Skaife and Russell Ingall.
Bowe is confident of a strong performance in the first of the weekend's two 250km races tomorrow.
"With the new control tyre we are using this weekend, there has been a lot of spins as people get used to the new rubber," Bowe said.
"I really believe it will be a bit of a race of attrition and half the secret will be to keep out of trouble.
"It is also much easier to do that at the front of the field, because the racing can get pretty frantic back in the pack.
"This race can be won and lost in the pits, so it is vital that the entire team is at their peak.
"All our crew are really looking forward to tomorrow and we have our fingers crossed that our good luck will continue."
