Lockwood's solid result at Hamilton 400

Matt Lockwood had a difficult weekend in his older VU Holden Ute on a track better suited to the newer Holdens and Fords. But he was pleased to be part of the winning Ute team in the Trans Tasman Challenge

During qualifying a brake problem led to a major lockup that flatted Lockwood's new tyres. He then had to race with used tyres, which was a significant disadvantage on a new track with very little rubber laid down.

The seeding system, which required one Kiwi and one Australian on each row, didn't work in his favour either - pushing Lockwood down the grid by one or two places in each race.

The first race was uneventful, with Lockwood struggling for grip and unable to match the straight line speed of the more powerful newer Utes. After qualifying in sixth and starting in eighth he finished the race in seventh position.

While challenging for fourth in the second race, Lockwood was shunted from behind, leaving him in sixth position.

In the final race Lockwood was running sixth when he was black-flagged for a small piece of loose bumper. The resulting pit stop put him at the back of the field, but he managed to pass seven cars in the last four laps to finish in 12th place.

"It's not the result I was hoping for but I've had a great year to date and am looking forward to new challenges next season" Lockwood said.
