PITHER LOOKS FOR SOLID ROUND TO BRING CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Championship leader Chris Pither 'The Doctor' of Palmerston North heads to his favourite New Zealand circuit this weekend keen to wrap up the 2009/2010 NZV8 Utes title.
Pither has led the series since day one in his ENZED Falcon and arrives at the twisty 2.4 kilometre Timaru International Motor Raceway at Levels on the outskirts of Timaru with a 40 point lead in the championship. To take the championship he must negotiate his way through four races and with 39 points available for each race win the title is far from cut and dried.
As 'The Doctor' himself said after the most recent round at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway last weekend, "I'm looking for a good solid round to seal the championship." Chris was speaking just moments after the one that got away. On the final lap of the last race of the round last weekend a fuel surge problem slowed the ENZED Falcon allowing Pithers closest rival, defending champion Caine Lobb 'the Ginja Ninja', to take the round win by a countback.
That broke Pithers sequence of round wins after he had won the first three rounds of the championship, albeit the third was also on a countback that went the way of 'The Doctor'.
To date there have been fourteen races in the series, Chris having won nine of them and Lobb the other five.
Despite the fact Chris has been racing in Australia for several seasons he has raced at Timaru quite recently having driven a V8 Touring Car there in January.
'The Doctor' and the other drivers in the NZV8 Utes Series will have three test sessions at Timaru on Friday before qualifying on Saturday morning at 10.35am. That afternoon the first race takes place at 1.00pm over 8 laps with a 10 lap marble draw grid race at 3.15pm. On Sunday, the final day of the championship, the third race of the round takes place at 11.40am with a reverse marble grid over 10 laps. The season concludes with a race from a grid based on accumulated points at 2.35pm over 8 laps.
