EDGELL TAKES FIRST PODIUM
Tim Edgell topped off a series of great results when he secured a podium position at Round 4 of the BNT V8s Championship at Timaru International Motor Raceway this weekend.
Edgell and the Chesters Falcon ran comfortably at the front of the field for the entire weekend, securing two second placings to gain third place overall for the round. Edgell now sits fourth overall in the point standings in what is becoming a closely fought championship.
It was another brilliant performance by the Auckland driver. He not only raced to two superb second placings behind consumate professional Craig Baird in the difficult weather conditions but he also set the fastest lap times in two of the three races, narrowly missing breaking the existing lap record.
"We had good speed in the dry, the car was working really well. The wet set-up was better in the third race than it had been in the first race. We've been consistently in the top five recently and the last two rounds we've been in the top three. I want the next one, we'll just keep chipping away at it."
Tim shone all weekend. During testing he was eighth fastest in the wet session on Saturday morning and then fastest in the dry session on Saturday afternoon.
He was second on the timesheets during the first segment of qualifying and then secured his spot in the top ten shootout with the fifth fastest time. His single lap in the top ten shootout was the second fastest and put him on the front row alongside Angus Fogg for the following mornings race.
When rain arrived as the cars were lining up for the first race on Sunday morning Edgell elected to start from the pits on wet tyres. After an incident stopped the race after the opening lap at the restart he led for a lengthy part of the race before Baird snatched the lead on the penultimate lap of the race.
In the second race Tim challenged Baird in the early stages, the duo pulling away to finish well clear of the rest of the field. The Chesters Falcon set the fastest lap in the race, narrowly missing out on a new lap record.
The reverse grid race was run in wet conditions and Tim admitted he made an error that saw him off the track before resuming to finish 15th. Despite that minor indiscretion Edgell again set the fastest lap of the race. When the points for the round were totalled Edgell was third overall while he has moved back into 4th position in the championship.
Edgell and the Chesters Falcon have put in a series of impressive performances throughout the championship but this was their best result to date. Many are predicting a breakthrough win is not far away.
The next round of the championship takes place at Manfeild Park in Feilding over the weekend 13/14 February.
