MAIDEN V8 WIN FOR KNIGHT

Christchurch driver Andy Knight scored his maiden win in the BNT V8s Championship at his home circuit, Powerbuilt Tools Raceway today.

Knight, a former New Zealand Grand Prix and Toyota Racing Series Champion was a major force in the top ten of the V8s series last season. However when he crossed the line in his Century Batteries Falcon in the final race of the round today he joined a select group of drivers who have won races in the championship.

The 24-year-old had been on the pace all weekend, qualifying sixth fastest in Saturday's top ten shootout. However a good start to the first race on Sunday morning was ruined when he was turned around at the hairpin, causing damage that eventually forced him out of the race. That consigned Knight to the rear of the grid for the second race and he put in an impressive drive as he carved his way up the field into the top ten.

However the highlight of the weekend came in the finale when Knight made a good start to tuck in behind early leader Tim Edgell at the start of the 20 lap race. News soon came through that Edgell had received a 10 second time penalty meaning Knight could sit tight behind his rival to take the win.

He crossed the line behind Edgell who dropped to third in the results to score his first win in a BNT V8s Championship race in front of a large home crowd.

Knight is supported in the championship by Century Batteries, Parker Stores, Milwaukee Power Tools and The Rock FM.

The next round of the championship is at Teretonga Park in Invercargill from 14-16 January.
