MCNALLY FIGHTS BACK FROM SETBACK IN RACE 1 OF V8 UTES

Rhys McNally had to fight back from a first lap missed gear in race 1 which dropped him back to 25th place.

Qualifying 17th in today's session wasn't exactly where Rhys wanted to be going into race 1 but he was determined to forge his way up the field.

"The times are that close," Rhys said.

"We made some good gains overnight but there is only a few tenths between us and the top ten.

"It is frustrating to be starting mid-pack but we are always going to give it our best shot."

After a strong start in the race, Rhys missed a gear on the first lap where he selected first instead of third.

That mistake cost him dearly as he dropped back to position 25 at the end of lap one.

Although frustrated, Rhys used this as an opportunity to carve his way back through the field to get up to 16th by the end of the race.

"I didn't want to be down the back but, given that I was, I just used it as an opportunity to get some passing practice under my belt."

Rhys will start from position 3 tomorrow when the top 18 are reversed is the televised second race.
