VEACH EARNS FIRST USF2000 RACE WIN
Sophomore Andretti Autosport driver Veach wins from the Pole at Sebring International Raceway
Sebring, FL. (Jan. 4, 2011) Andretti Autosport driver Zach Veach won from the pole position at Sebring International Raceway's 3-7-mile, paved road course, crossing the finish line with a 16-second lead over teammate Spencer Pigot. Veach earned his first career USF2000 race win piloting his No. 7 ZAKOSI Data Backup Mazda.
"I'm really excited to see what we can do during the 2011 season after my first win during the Winterfest at Sebring," said Veach, who was a nominee in Sports Illustrated's annual Sports Kid of the Year award contest in 2010. "To get two poles and have the fastest times in every session is definitely motivating. Hopefully we can carry this momentum to the full season when points matter. The crew worked really hard this week and I'm so grateful for them. All of our hard work has finally paid off. I'm looking forward to next week's races at Homestead."
Veach dominated all four USF2000 practice sessions and earned the pole position for both Sebring race events. While the sophomore-USF2000 driver Veach led early in Monday's Race No. 1, both Andretti Autosport drivers suffered gearbox failures retiring them to the sidelines in Monday's opening Winterfest event.
The newly 16-year-old Veach earned two $500 Cooper Tires "Don't Give Up a Thing" Pole awards and earned $1,000 for his race win. Veach is vying to be the overall USF2000 Winterfest champion and should he win, he would be honored with a $10,000 certificate to be used for entries throughout the 2011 USF2000 National Championship season.
The driver hailed by CNN as an "Intriguing," made 10 starts on the 2010 USF2000 schedule with a previous best finish of second in the USF2000 Series, finishing fifth in series points despite entering the series after the season-opener and therefore missing out on two rounds of race points.
Veach plans to run all 17 USF2000 events in 2011 and will wrap up the Cooper Tires Winterfest with three more race events to be held at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Jan. 12 and 13.
