LIBERTY MOTORSPORTS GAINS EXPERIENCE AND POINTS IN FIRST OVAL OUTING
Illinois-based team just missed top-five in USF2000 race at O'Reilly Raceway Park
ROCKFORD, ILL. (June 1, 2010) - Liberty Motorsports exits its first-ever oval race at O'Reilly Raceway Park on Saturday night (May 29), having learned a great deal, and more importantly earned valuable points in its chase for the Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda series title. Rookie Terrick Mansur showed good speed in his circle track debut, finishing sixth in Round Three of the competitive 12-race series.
With only one day of previous oval experience for both Liberty Motorsports and Mansur - care of an official USF2000 test earlier in the month - the opening day of action at ORP on Friday was to be spent working on car setup and racing line. Initially things went according to plan, with the Aruban racer posting times comfortable inside the top-10 during the first two hour-long practice sessions. Things changed at the end of the second run however, as an engine failure forced Liberty Motorsports to temporarily park the car and quick convert on oval setup on the backup car brought to ORP. Thanks to some fast work by the crew, Mansur was able to take part in the third and final hour-long practice run of the day, once again cracking the top-10.
After a very late night spent completing preparations on the back-up car and ensuring the car was aligned and setup for more oval action, the Liberty Motorsports gang were ready for Night Before the 500 race day at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Continually getting more and more comfortable with the dynamics of oval racing each time he got behind the wheel of the No. 14 Liberty Motorsports which is supported by Aruba.com entry, Mansur posted his best time around the banked oval in Saturday morning practice prior to single-car qualifying.
When two-lap qualifying took place after the lunch break, the Liberty Motorsports standout just missed a top-five place, posting the seventh best combined time, earning a row four starting place.
Confident he could advance up the charts during the 50-lap Night Before the 500 race, Mansur got away cleanly when the green flag waved in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Right from the get go, Mansur was involved in a entertaining multi-car fight for position. Dueling lap after lap, he remained in contention for a top-five finish until the checkered flag fell. Mansur in the end gained valuable experience and points via a sixth place finish.
Next up for the Liberty Motorsports racers is the Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda, the second oval race - Round Four - on the 2010 calendar. The event takes place on June 19, at the Iowa Speedway. Prior to that race, Liberty Motorsports will travel north to Canada, for Rounds Five and Six of the F2000 Championship Series on June 12-13, at Mosport International Raceway.
