The 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 was quite a nerve racker. I've been a die-hard Audi man since well before the diesel era and seeing my favorite driver hit a wall at 130mph was certainly a terrifying 3 minutes. It seemed that all was lost after the second R18 retired, but Team Joest persevered and after 24 hours of near perfection and 3000 miles driven, Fassler, Lotterer and Treluyer climbed to the top of the stand and reveled in the champaign misted air.
This year, like any other, was full of the normal publicity and crazed journalists making celebrities of the Race Week Heroes. Waltrip's Ferrari debut and Aston Martin's famed return topped the speed channel newsfeed but like every new attack on the legendary circuit, both fell faster than expected. Waltrip discovered the true intensity behind Le Mans and how vicious Le Sarthe can be. Aston Martin fell to the wayside with only 2 hours on the clock.
Every year I am refueled by this race. Every June my passion for the sport is renewed and reborn. Only one team can be overall champion. Only three men can stand on that podium. Only the most dedicated will ever prevail.
My life, for 24 hours, stands completely still.
What race or series makes you feel the same?
