Hunt, Walker score Boise Western Sprint wins. Twin Falls debut Thursday; Saturday's host is Salt Lake City.
The battle for the USAC Western Sprint Car Championship has developed into an all-out war with four drivers separated by only 41 points going into Thursday night's inaugural series appearance at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, ID. A 40-lap feature is scheduled on the 1/3-mile paved oval. A 40-lapper is also scheduled Saturday night at the 3/8-mile paved Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. and Axel Walker of Olympia, Wash. scored feature victories in weekend action at Meridian Speedway in Boise, Idaho. Hunt led all 35 laps of Friday night's race for his second win of the season, while Walker's initial USAC triumph came in a wire-to-wire effort in Saturday night's 40-lapper.
Rick Hendrix of Canoga Park, Calif. finished third on Friday but was 17th Saturday. He continues to lead the standings by only 10 points over 2000 USAC Russell Pro Triple Crown Champion Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif. Barber was seventh on Friday and third on Saturday. Hunt is third in the new standings, only 30 behind Hendrix, while Chad Nichols, Friday's fastest Boise qualifier, is fourth in the new points going into Thursday's race at Twin Falls.
Trailing Hunt's Thompson Toyota/Bos Sheet Metal Chevy/Beast on Friday at Boise were Brian McClish, Hendrix, Scott Hansen and Nichols. Walker, who piloted the Bar-D Racing Chevy/Beast was trailed Saturday by Kenny Hamilton, Barber, Nichols and Todd Ellison.
Practice at Twin Falls begins at 4 pm, while Saturday's practice at Salt Lake City commences at 2:30.
