Hunt pulls off sixth place finish in Gerhardt Classic

Lincoln, Calif. -- Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif.scored a strong sixth place finish in the USAC Western Midgets Gerhardt Classic 100 lap feature at Madera Speedway on Saturday night.

Hunt, the five-time USAC champion, ran strong in the #4 Midget car. He was on top of the board in practice but a change made before qualifying saw him qualify ninth.

The prestigious Gerhardt Classic was made even more important as it was part of a huge night of racing at the one-third mile asphalt oval, with the NASCAR Camping World Series West and several other divisions on the card.

A huge crowd on hand was treated to a fast-paced Midget show.

Hunt fell back to 12th at the start of the event and was mired in that position during the opening 58 lap green flag run.

The field bunched up when the caution came out and Hunt was able to move up to sixth in just 20 laps.

He then challenged for third position throughout the final 25 laps of the race in a thrilling finish, but was unable to move forward due to a clogged injector nozzle.

"We were setup for the long run and were reeling in the leaders," Hunt said. "having the motor issue was frustrating as I thought we were running short on fuel. But we were fortunate to finish and I look forward to our next outing."

The popular racer will now set his sights on the new Stockton 99 Speedway on May 2nd. Hunt will be competing in the USAC Western States Sprint Car events on the newly re-opened quarter-mile oval.

Racing action gets started at 6 p.m. at the historic venue located off of Wilson Way.
